“It’s usually a food that’s eaten by the Chinese side of my family on New Year’s. The Chinese word for fish, ‘Yu’ sounds similar to the word for abundance. There’s a phrase that goes along with eating the fish that talks about the change in the new year, and how it symbolizes wealth and abundance. So it’s a tradition in my family that wherever we’re celebrating the New Year or Lunar New Year, whether that be in a restaurant or at home, we always have fish.”
